Having to explain this chaotic world to a young person can be very challenging but adding race and politics can only add to that difficult conversation. At first I had no idea how to answer this but after a little bit of research I had a better idea. I guess I would start the conversation by being very broad and hope for the best. I would answer the question exactly the way it has been asked. The first thing I would say is it is about Social and political organizations like churches, government and schools treating all citizens equally. Black Lives Matter is about equality for people of color.Also that they deserve to be treated equally. This can be a very teachable moment. I can show the a young person how to value diversity and to celebrate the differences and to recognize what we all have in common. The mission of the YMCA of Greater Providence is to build healthy spirit, mind and body for all, through programs, services and relationships that are based upon our core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. The vision of the YMCA of greater providence is to become the most valued resource for families and individuals seeking healthy lifestyles and wellness. In my own words the mission statement for The YMCA of Greater Providence is that they exist to help individuals and families develop an active body, mind and spirit. The YMCA has programs and services to promote that. The core values are caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.   I do not believe there is any problems with this mission statement. The values that this mission statement articulates are caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. I can agree with these values and they are good values for an individual to have. A nonprofit is a charity and or a governmental organization. A nonprofit can be defined by a tax status, what the organization does with the surplus of money, having volunteers and a board of directors, and the work that is done is guided by a mission statement. Nonprofits are organizations that exist to make the world a better place. There are a few common characteristics of a nonprofit. First, having a focus on a mission and a purpose. Second, a standard for of organization this includes volunteers, board of directors, donors and staff. Third, nonprofits are independent, nonprofits only answer to themselves.  Fourth, public benefit this means they serve the public. And fifth, voluntary board leadership. The board has the interest of the organization at heart and they lead with the mission statement and they make decisions about the organization related to the mission.
