Having to explain this chaotic world to a young person can be very challenging but adding race and politics can only add to that difficult conversation. At first I had no idea how to answer this but after a little bit of research I had a better idea. I guess I would start the conversation by being very broad and hope for the best. I would answer the question exactly the way it has been asked. The first thing I would say is it is about Social and political organizations like churches, government and schools treating all citizens equally. Black Lives Matter is about equality for people of color. Also that they deserve to be treated equally. This can be a very teachable moment. I can show the a young person how to value diversity and to celebrate the differences and to recognize what we all have in common. I would say imagine if you walked down the candy aisle and all there was were skittles and no other kind of candy. It would be pretty boring if there was only one kind of candy in the world.
Q: Is there a relationship between BLM and Civil Rights Movement?
Q: What are the goals of BLM?
I agree that conversations around race and political movements can be difficult. I do like your response however. I think it's important for young people to be informed about the world that surrounds them. :)
ReplyDeleteHey Kristen! While I think you do a great job explaining equality to a younger group I think when it comes so the Black Lives Matter movement bringing in that all lives matter, which is true, just kind of takes away from the conversation. It's important to talk about how black men and women had to form a movement because of how poorly they were being treated in society and specifically from police officers. Hope this helps!

DeleteI did not see how that would take away from the conversation but now I do.
DeleteTo answer your first question, I would recommend the documentary 13th:

Fantastic documentary!!
DeleteHey Kristen, Let's talk about the goals of BLM tonight. But in the meantime, I wanted to pass along this link to the Movement's Policy Agenda: https://policy.m4bl.org/. The demands for BLM's national week of action in schools is to 1. End Zero Tolerance 2. Hire more Black teachers and 3. Teach Black history and ethnic studies
